Kwik Trip plans third West Duluth location

Just as construction is wrapping up on 2015's newest Kwik Trip store locations within the Twin Ports area news begins to break on the next round of locations. Plans have been unveiled for a third West Duluth Kwik Trip location bringing the number in Duluth up to 5 and the number in the Twin Ports up to 15 (if our math is correct).

The new location is planned for the Spirit Valley Shopping Center near the intersection of Bristol Street and Central Avenue. Currently the site is a parking lot located directly behind the Little Store and Kosta's Gyros building.

Kwik Trip plans to construct a free standing location and what appears to be a 13 pump fueling station. The location would follow the same design and set-up as the other area locations that have recently be built.

AREA EXPANSION

Kwik Trip wasn't joking when they said they expected to have around 15 locations by the year 2015 when they made their Twin Ports debut a few years ago.

The company recently opened a store in Superior on Second Street and will soon open another Superior location on Hammond Avenue. Those two locations will add to their Tower Avenue, Second Street, and Banks Avenue locations bringing the count to five in Superior.

In Duluth Kwik Trip currently has a location on Michigan Avenue and Grand Ave with a location under construction further down on Grand Ave past Interstate 35 and another location under construction on the corner of Arlington Avenue and Central Entrance. Those locations all together bring the city count to four locations with this new location on Bristol St being the fifth.

In Hermantown there currently is a location at the intersection of Highway 53 and Sugar Maple Drive with another location opening soon near the intersection of Highway 53 and Arrowhead Road (in front of Menards).

In Cloquet the company currently has two locations with one on North Road and the other near Interstate 35 on Highway 45.

Last month Kwik Trip announced that they will be constructing a new Two Harbors location on old Sonju parcel on Seventh Avenue. In addition to Two Harbors Kwik Trip currently is also constructing a location in Moose Lake in a business park near Interstate 35.

If you're following us, that means there are 15 open, under construction, or planned locations within the Twin Ports area... right where the company said they would be.

NOT AT THE FINISH LINE YET

Even with 15 locations... Kwik Trip isn't done.

Rumors are still swirling about a potential East Duluth location near the hospitals, possibly on London Road. Then there are also sources saying that an additional location could be planned near the entry to Highway 61 which is the ExpressWay to Two Harbors.

And then there's the Iron Range...

It's likely that we will see Kwik Trip's numbers overall end up in the mid to upper 20's by the time that their Northland expansion is complete which likely won't occur for a few more years. Regardless, there are no doubts within our mind that wherever you are in the Northland now (or in the near future) there's bound to be a Kwik Trip near by.

As always, we'll be sure to post more information about the construction status of the other Kwik Trips in the area, along with their opening dates and further company plans right here at CDINDULUTH!

Kwik Trip embarks on next phase of Twin Ports expansion

Kwik Trip has officially begun construction on three of their new locations for the Duluth area. The first is along Miller Trunk Highway in front of Menards in Hermantown, the second at the corner of Raleigh Street and Grand Avenue in West Duluth and the third at the corner of Central Entrance and Arlington Avenue.

There still are additional locations planned for the area including one more in Superior on the south side of 21st Avenue East and there are rumors of an additional location out in East Duluth.

Above: Last week construction equipment sat ready to begin work on the new Kwik Trip in front of Menards in Hermantown

Most recently a location was planned for the corner of 4th Street and East Sixth Street in East Duluth. That site is currently home to an auto shop along with Last Chance Liquor which will be closing this summer as a the owners focus on a new home brew store they are opening in Fitger's. Corporate officials at Kwik Trip will not confirm that the project originally planned for Sixth Street is dead... nor will they confirm that it it is alive.

It is well known that Kwik Trip is wanting to enter the East Duluth market. Some sources are saying that the company is back to looking at London Road for a location as they had originally hoped for. A while back it was floated that Kwik Trip was to be part of the Burger King redevelopment at the corner of 21st Avenue East and London Road. We all know that not to be true now as Harbor Bay Real Estate Advisors is moving forward with their plans for a large mixed use project the site. You can see that project here.

What can be said is that Kwik Trip is not finished expanding... not close at all.

The company will soon begin construction on a new location in Moose Lake next to a recently opened McDonald's (you can see that project here). There's also plans for another location closer to Duluth possibly in Esko. Then there's virtually untapped market of the North Shore and the Iron Range. Sources say the Iron Range will be the next stop for this rapidly expanding company most likely in 2016.

We've been in contact with Kwik Trip representatives and will have opening dates for the new store locations within the coming weeks.

Kwik Trip plans second Grand Avenue location

Kwik Trip is at it again and this time it's planning a second store for Grand Avenue.

It was announced last fall that Kwik Trip was planning additional locations in the near future and that one would be near the intersection of Raleigh Street and Grand Avenue. That store will be located at 6520 Grand Avenue on a vacant site next to Walker Display. Construction could begin as early as May.

Plans for a utility easement will go before the city at tonight's planning commission for the planned redevelopment of the vacant corner near the Zoo. The new station will have 15 pumps for regular fueling along with an additional eight pumps for diesel. It will also include a car wash which will make it the second location in the area to include one the only other being at the location on Banks Avenue in Superior. The station will also include compressed natural gas.

Kwik Trip currently has opened eight locations within the Twin Ports area. The company recently stated that plans for up to 15 locations are in the works. Plans are still on track for additional locations to be constructed this summer. One will be located at the corner of Arlington Road and Central Entrance and another location on East Sixth Street, both in Duluth. Kwik Trip also is still planning a location in front of Menards in Hermantown and an additional location in Superior.

Kwik Trip confirms second Duluth location

(Both locations will sport the similar looks of the above 2014 prototype)

Look for not one, but two Kwik Trip locations to begin construction soon in Duluth. That is if they're approved by the city of Duluth planning commission. What may be most surprising about the two locations is that they are a mere mile and a half apart. That's right. A mile and a half. As it's been mentioned before, Kwik  Trip really likes to secure a market when they make their first presence. Rochester alone has over 12 locations, and they are continuing to expand.

We posted a few weeks ago about the first planned location at 4219 Grand Avenue where there currently is a vacant church and a vacant gas station. Those plans are correct in the fact that Kwik Trip will bulldoze all structures on site and build Duluth's first official location there. What we failed to catch onto was the fact that there was an additional location, on an almost identical site (which may be the reason for such a quick development of the second site) a short distance away.

The second Kwik Trip location is planed for 2716 West Superior Street. That's a site that currently houses North West Plow and Auto company. If you still can't quite figure out where we are talking about, think the site that's across from Quizno's and Little Caesars near the Post Office.

Both sites will be going before the City of Duluth's planning commission in the coming weeks for approval.Construction could begin this winter still, with an opening occurring in early summer. Don't forget there also are two locations planned for Superior (with a third under development), with two other locations rumored for the Duluth area. The only area that seems to be lacking plans for a Kwik Trip is the Miller Hill mall area. We can only assume those plans are somewhere in the works.

Here's our two cents on this. We think it couldn't be better news for both areas. Kwik Trip really is making an effort to take sites that are currently underutilized or are in poor shape regarding the structures on site and really turn them around into something positive. Yeah, we understand that when it comes down to the grand scheme of things, it's still a convenience store and gas station, BUT, things could be worse. You could have a fast food giant such as McDonald's setting up shop on each of these corners. The one that we really are excited about is the Superior Street location. That area really hasn't seen much development within the last decade at all. The site that Kwik Trip will be occupying really is need of an update and we think something fresh will do wonders for the whole image of the neighborhood. People also need to remember that Kwik Trip is known also for their almost market type offerings within their convenience stores and often are really liked by the communities in which they locate. So what could be so bad about another shop in the neighborhood offering milk, butter, and eggs for an insanely cheap price?

(Potential Kwik Trip locations planned for Twin Ports area)

News broke this past year that Kwik Trip was planning on making a rather extensive leap into the area. The La Crosse, Wisconsin based company has aggressive plans for the Northland... where it says it could add 12 stores alone in the Twin Ports. Kwik Trip announced last year that it had plans for two stores in Superior; one on Tower Avenue and North 28th Street and another on the corner of Banks Avenue and Belknap Street. Another location was added to their development plans this past year at the site of Nemadji Travel Plaza, which will be completely razed to allow for construction of the new store. Demolition has already begun at some of these sites, but no official construction on physical store structures will begin until the spring of 2014.

But how does this relate to Duluth? Well, there's been quite a few rumors swirling around about where the first Kwik Trip might open. Duluth itself actually has three locations that are almost set in stone that will be developed for new Kwik Trip locations. We reported that the Burger King on London Road in East Duluth is slated to be razed in order to make way for a new Kwik Trip. Although official plans have yet to be presented, we have sources that confirm that this is still the goal for the site. As with many companies expansion plans for Duluth, Kwik Trip is hoping to establish a location in each of the three major areas of Duluth (West, East, and the Miller Hill area) all by the end of 2014. The other location that has been added to the rumor mill recently is that Kwik Trip will be constructing a location up the Miller Trunk Highway (actually in Hermantown) in front of the new Sugar Maple Crossings retail center that was recently completed. That's the center that will be housing the first Dickey's BBQ restaurant in the area and already houses Crossfit Duluth and Fastel. We're looking into this rumor more and will hopefully have news on it soon.

Kwik Trip Grand

What we really are here to report today is the specific location that Kwik Trip will present to the Duluth Planning Commission this next week for their first official Duluth location. As the trend continues with retailers entering the Duluth market, Kwik Trip is planning on setting up shop in West Duluth on Grand Avenue. The site (outlined above) is situated between 43rd Avenue W and 42nd Avenue W and currently is home to Christ Lutheran Church and a vacant gas station. The church is looking to sell due to a smaller congregation and no longer having the need for such a large space. Kwik Trip plans to raze everything on the entire block  up to the alleyway and construct their first Duluth location if rezoning and the plans are approved by the city of Duluth. If you still can't pin point where this site is, it's right across Essentia Health's West Duluth campus.

We'll look into finding the specific details about the development of Kwik Trip's first Duluth location and will be sure to bring them right here to cdinduluth as soon as we find out. Until then, the Twin Ports can begin preparations to welcome potentially SIX Kwik Trip locations to the area.
